Seen a lot of people speaking out online recently and so I thought I'd share the advice the police gave us for speaking out online. It will hopefully prevent you from being sued by your abuser for harrassment/ misuse of private information/ libel/ whatever else.
The key thing is the wording, the word 'rape' and 'rapist' are loaded so use 'serious sexual assault' and if no charges have been bought you have to use 'alleged' as wrong as it feels to not label things as they are. This is especially important if you publicly name your abuser.
I wish I had listened to the advice on wording but I wanted to call it what it was. It felt wrong to use 'alleged' and not label him as what he is but 1.5y into a civil case and over 12k in legal fees I do wish I wasn't having to be further traumatised for speaking the truth.
I didn't expect to get DM's helping to word statements, thank you to those survivors who have entrusted me with that. I'm obviously no legal expert and am only going on the advice I was given by my DC but I'll pop a draft disclaimer you can use below that *hopefully* covers you.
