Seen a lot of people speaking out online recently and so I thought I& #39;d share the advice the police gave us for speaking out online. It will hopefully prevent you from being sued by your abuser for harrassment/ misuse of private information/ libel/ whatever else.
The key thing is the wording, the word & #39;rape& #39; and & #39;rapist& #39; are loaded so use & #39;serious sexual assault& #39; and if no charges have been bought you have to use & #39;alleged& #39; as wrong as it feels to not label things as they are. This is especially important if you publicly name your abuser.
I wish I had listened to the advice on wording but I wanted to call it what it was. It felt wrong to use & #39;alleged& #39; and not label him as what he is but 1.5y into a civil case and over 12k in legal fees I do wish I wasn& #39;t having to be further traumatised for speaking the truth.
I didn& #39;t expect to get DM& #39;s helping to word statements, thank you to those survivors who have entrusted me with that. I& #39;m obviously no legal expert and am only going on the advice I was given by my DC but I& #39;ll pop a draft disclaimer you can use below that *hopefully* covers you.
