Crews at Pine Ridge Elementary, originally responded to a fire alarm (dispatched at 2:42 p.m.), are investigating a possible hazardous material release. The school was already evacuated. The material is contained to one room and is not a threat to the community.
AFR's hazmat team found a kerosene spill and was able to mitigate it using absorbent. Crews are restoring equipment.
We've received some questions from keen observers wondering why level A suits were required for this spill. Before entry into the hot zone, our technicians had a report of a visible "white cloud" and the material had not been identified.
This level of PPE is for worst-case scenarios and was more than enough to keep our members safe in this environment.
