I want to say something important to any teachers looking for jobs, particularly NQT. I am grateful to anyonecrho can RT for a bigger audience. This week I have shortlisted first a teacher. 18 applied. Of those -about half had had a virtual tour with me altho you wouldnât know as
Most didnât mention it or refer to the school hardly at all. At least they had bothered to make contact. This was better than the 9 others who I didnât know at all and so they had even less chance of standing out.
What was the point of me doing the tour if they arenât going to use it to make their application stronger? To show why they want to work in our school, to show how their interests fit our needs.
Schools are all different. I know getting a job is hard but when all 18 met the essential person spec it then came down to desirable and then down to my feel. I canât get a feel if I know so little, if they feel so generic.
Please show some passion in your applications but I donât expect you to know everything, in fact iâd be delighted if one of the 18 had showed something they want to develop about themselves.
The shortlisted people are the ones who stand out, who make me feel they could fit in, who show some interest and some life. I donât want blood, I donât want you to work all hours or make me tea but I do want people who want to be there and have taken the trouble to find out who
We are and what weâre about. So if youâre struggling to get a job, ring the school, do the virtual visit, refer to it in your application and show why youâd fit. Make sure all the essential/ desirable bits are clear - we only had 9, we didnât need pages. The worst
Applications were the ones who have been looking for a job for more than a year, had they been doing such terrible applications all that time? How draining and sad you just feel from the rejection. You can get a job but the application needs to be right. Happy to DM if it helps.
