Another painterly attempt, this one more successful I think!
Minotaurs have a special place in my heart as my first mtg card, unquenchable Fury, was a cow boy. Thread->
Brief! I love snowy mountains so I was happy to learn it was set there. I knew the challenge would be making a bull's head hammer without the ornamental horns feeling like they were in the way.
As always, thumbnails first. I wasn't much looking at the design of his outfit, more just how to convey power and motion. I did start thinking about that hammer on the left there.
Narrowed my choices down. It's hard to show speed when something is coming straight at the viewer, even with "woosh lines". Despite the other options feeling powerful, I liked the bottom right the best for its power + speed
I did up my colour comp sketch, sent it in, and had to adjust based on feedback as he wasn't filling enough of the frame. Instead of coming up to a ledge he might leap from, he's coming to the viewer on an even level. I wanted big red energy, and PINK clouds!
A closer look at the final hammer design.
Gif time! I turned his head down in a more intent, predatory way to make him feel more dangerous.
Close-ups to show off the strokes I was going for. Also a good chance to talk about colour constancy;
If the subject is getting hit with coloured light (in this case red) then the lit surfaces will take on that hue. Easy to show with the neutral grey/white fur. But how to show -
What colour it REALLY is? How to signal to the viewer that the fur is neutral, not really pink?
In the mid-tones.
The midtones will take on MORE of the actual "local" colour. you can see it here, where the forms turned away from the light become more neutral and grey.
Colour constancy also plays a part, where everything, even those neutrals, are "moved over" towards the dominant colour. those neutral areas are still a dull orange/red, but because they're placed next to a VIBRANT red, they feel more neutral in comparison.
