Centrism is a moral fiction that allows people to believe they are resisting the "extremes" of the right and left in equal measure. In reality, they are helping to aid and abet a status quo that is itself extreme in its moral abhorrence and environmental unsustainability.
Centrists tell themselves they oppose the extreme polarities of leftism and rightism. OK then –– what are those extreme poles? On the left: the abolition of the state-enforced segregation/murder that occurs on behalf of invested capital. On the right: the perpetuation of same.
The very act of framing the "left" and "right" as equal opposites to each other cedes power to reactionaries and weakens antifascism. That is why centrism is a rightist philosophy at its core. It's also why liberals side with corporatism over socialism in primary after primary.
For those who believe the status quo isn't violent, and that "centrism" isn't a rightwing philosophy: Why it is that, whenever people come together to attack the actual roots of racial/economic injustice, they are met with extreme force by a state who was eerily prepared for it?
