While you were sleeping, Tennessee lawmakers were busy sneaking through an unconstitutional 6 week abortion ban
To be clear, a 6 week abortion ban is a de facto total abortion ban. And very unpopular. So Tennessee lawmakers passed it in the dead of night.
Despite anti-choice efforts, no 6 week abortion ban is currently in effect. So that’s great! Lawmakers won’t stop trying to pass these bans though. That’s terrible.
6 week bans are currently blocked in places like Mississippi, Ohio, Kentucky, and Iowa. If these bills are unconstitutional why do lawmakers keep advancing them?
Well for starters the bills make for good campaign fodder. Lawmakers love to campaign on being “the most pro-life lawmaker” this side of the Mississippi
Also. Republicans have been VERY BUSY confirming Trump judges committed to ending legal abortion. Lawmakers are going to keep teeing up bills for them to try.
But that’s not all! The bill also mandates unnecessary ultrasounds and a requirement that doctors push “abortion reversal” junk science
This bill somehow gets even worse! For juveniles in custody of the Department of Children’s Services it removes judicial bypass.

That means for juveniles in state care this is a complete ban.
Advocates have promised to sue to block the bill. #TeamLegal will be all over that for you when it happens, don’t you worry.
This is the second time in as many weeks that conservatives have used uprisings against police violence and a pandemic as cover to sneak through unconstitutional abortion restrictions. Iowa just did this with a 24 hr waiting period.
We expect this won’t be the last attempt by lawmakers to pass some anti-choice nonsense when they think no one is watching. But we are!
