The way sexual violence played out during the Bosnian genocide was an extreme itteration of the ongoing treatment of women and their bodies in general. Not only were Bosnian Muslim women imprisoned in rape camps but they were held hostage to prevent abortion after being raped.

The cruel treatment of Bosnian Muslim women during the genocide served as a way to “cleanse” the country of Bosnian Muslims and to breed a new line of Serbian children. A consequences of patriarchal culture that awards ethnicity based on paternal lineage.

I’ve given two lecture this week in which I mentioned the Handmaid’s Tale. The shock and fear that Handmaid’s Tale would happen in the US was ahistorical to me, as it already played out w/ the systematic rapes & forcible detention of Bosnian Muslim women to prevent abortions.

In the town of Visegrad, Bosnian Muslim women werent just sent off to rape camps but they were sent off to categorised rape camps which were created on the basis of attractiveness and ‘viability’. Attractive women & girls in one rape camps, older and ‘lesser’ in another.
