#Juneteenth is a day of celebration of freedom for Black Americans and the achievement of how far we have come as a nation, but also a reminder that the work to protect Black lives continues.

During slavery, there were laws in many areas that prohibited or limited the dressing of the enslaved.

So in an act of defiance and celebration, Juneteenth celebrants dressed in their finest clothes.
"During the initial days of the emancipation celebrations, there are accounts of former slaves tossing their ragged garments into the creeks and rivers and adorning themselves with clothing taken from the plantations belonging to their former 'masters'."

When Juneteenth began to strengthen, white people forbade black people from using public spaces. Black people then began to gather near bodies of water, eventually raising enough money to buy their own sites like Emancipation Park in Houston.
"As Black Texans moved to neighboring states like Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma, the holiday spread as well. City-wide festivities continued as far away as Milwaukee and California throughout the 20th century."

On Jan 1, 1980, Texas became the first state to make #JUNETEENTH an official state holiday through the efforts of Al Edwards, an African-American state legislator.

Black Texans used Juneteenth as a day to celebrate, but to also remind future generations to reflect on progress.
May we never forget the importance of Juneteenth.

Even after Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation it took 2.5 years for slavery to officially end America. Although freedom came late it still arrived for Black people.

Today is a day of celebration and reflection.
On this #Juneteenth , we continue to reflect that while we have come far, we still have much work to do.
