A little thread about something we need to keep talking about.

A couple of days ago I started a series of tweets, with the number 3650. Yesterday was 3649 and today is ... well, you get the idea.

Simply put, we know that the 2020’s is the last decade in which the world has even a remotely realistic chance to keep global heating below 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial averages. Currently, we’re way off target.

It will be very difficult, mostly because most of our governments lack the will to enact systemic change and tackle the big polluters while, simultaneously, they urge us to be more responsible. This will not work, because it is unjust and unfair.

Much smarter people than me have worked for decades to identify problems, devise solutions and campaign tirelessly for governments to act. The link between injustice and climate action is now well established. This needs our attention.

If we fail to change course in this decade, January 1, 2030 will not be the end of the world, but it’s an important date because it will mark the start of a very different world. So I started my series of tweets, aimed at different influential people, as a reminder.

I hope that the thread of tweets will mark a wonderful journey towards a world that is capable of living within its limits, where Black Lives do Matter and where there is real social and climate justice. I hope it will be full of good news and successes.

Yesterday I learned that, following a long campaign by brilliant people, Pope Francis has urged the world’s Catholics to shun fossil fuel and armaments investments. Today I discovered that the UK govt has abandoned (for now) all plans for fracking.

My fear is that by 2030 these victories will be recalled only as moments when we, once again, were defeated by the powerful interests of those who profit from destruction and injustice, but maybe not. I will be doing everything I can, online and off to change the story.

I’d like to ask for your help. Every day I will be tweeting to a politician, CEO or other influential person with a request, a story, a demand for action. If you have something to share about climate & social injustice that you want to be part of this thread, please share.

ps: the answers are not to be found in some kind of hideous eugenics. Thanks.
