Past:

"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves..."
"...and the Connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer. The freedmen are advised to remain at their present homes and work for wages."
Until backed by armed forces, enslaved Africans in Texas were still considered property and being exploited for their labor. This is one of the reasons why Juneteenth is important.
Present:

Organizations asking influencers, thought leaders, or subject matter experts from marginalized groups to offer their insights for free is insulting. And it happens way too much, in my opinion.
If a brand is serious in its commitment to Black Lives Matter, along with equity, inclusion, belonging, and diversity, I would strongly suggest that those commitments come with fair compensation.
Marginalized people never should have been considered free labor. They shouldn't be expected to do so now.

Do better.

Also, non-Black people need to share space as it relates to the items I discussed in this thread. Some of you will use this date to highlight *your* brand.

Don't do that.

Elevate Black folks instead, not just today, but as an overall practice.
