The human race has an interesting thought process when it comes to spending money on prevention.

We will have no problems spending a large sum if there is a tangible acquisition like a fridge, car, home, medical and dental treatment etc.

The amount can range from a few thousand to a few Crores. Often the higher the amount the more we have stretched our budget causing considerable amount of strain on ourselves.

Now having spent such a large sum, we expect it to last for ever as it was when we bought it.
Now we will cringe and complain when it comes to spending a miniscule amount on maintaining and repairing it.

The best example is a fridge repair. We will have no issues spending a lakh on buying it but will complain about spending 500 rupees for a technician's check up visit.
Mind you, the two are totally mutually exclusive. The technician is not usually coming from the shop/company we bought the piece of equipment from. Yet he often will have to hear "We paid such a large sum already for the fridge. Why should we pay for you to come take a look?"
If it happens within months or years of buying the equipment, I can understand. But if its been a few years, say 5 or more, don't confuse the issues.

When we bought our house in New Jersey, we needed to spend 1-2% of the purchase price annually on merely maintaining the house
in good condition. Not upgrading or renovating it.

Japanese cars last for ever we were told. And they do. But they need regular oil changes. Regular servicing. We were religious about it and our cars served us tremendously well. My wife's car had over 200,000 miles on it.
That's 3.6L KM. And it would have continued had we stayed on there.

They key was regular preventive maintenance visits.

Our body is another issue where this is compromised.

We are living longer. Yes the average fitness level has dramatically improved.
People are eating better, exercising regularly.

As a result people are living longer. But with that come the age related diseases. I often hear "The incidence of Blood Pressure and Diabetes has dramatically gone up compared to when we were younger"

That's an unfair comparision
It might have gone up in the younger age groups compared to the previous generation but let's not confuse the incidence occuring in the 60+ age group with the incidence of the 40+ age group of the previous generation.

"My ajoba never went to the dentist. He had perfect teeth."
Well think of the average Aji Ajoba when the current 40-50 age group was in school. At least half of them had dentures. Zero maintenance early on.

For anything we are blessed with or acquire, we have to plan for regular preventive care. There is a heavy price to pay otherwise.
Budget for that at the very start.

Don't look at it in the "What am I getting for this expense" way.

Look at it like "What do I stand to lose if I don't spend this amount".

Take your car for regular oil changes. Replace those break pads and tires regularly.

Paint the house
every few years. Get the plumbing and electrical fittings checked out.

Go for an annual check up. Get your vitals checked and analyzed. Get routine lab work. I feel terrible when I hear of 30-40 year olds losing body functions or worse life due to heart attacks and strokes.
"He was in such good health."

Sorry that's a generic statement. It is rare for someone to go from "healthy to heart attack" overnight.

See your dentist. "Immunity" is a buzz word being used often these days in the COVID era.

How does one have good immunity if you have half
of your teeth missing. There is no chance of proper nutrition with that many teeth missing.

Know your family history. Women with history of breast cancer and men with history of prostate cancer need early screenings.

I urge everyone to read this thread. Discuss it with your
spouse, doctor, dentist, CA, close friends and family.

Come up with a plan and stick to it.

After all, not for nothing do they say,

"PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE"
