Russia & China have strongly rebuked the IAEA BG resolution calling on Iran to give access to 2 sites, where Israeli documents allege nuclear work was carried out decades ago.

Gharib Abadi added regarding European support for the resolution:

“The European countries told us the language of the resolution was not too harsh. But I told them the content of the resolution doesn’t matter, this is a destructive action.”

The IAEA’s Director General Rafael Grossi also said today that the “only path forward” on the #Iran nuclear issue is to “continue cooperation” with Iran

In his formal response to the IAEA BG resolution, #Iran’s IAEA Amb Gharib Abadi says Iran has given the agency the most access of any country.

Gharib Abadi adds that the IAEA is now “magnifying” the issue of access to 2 sites which Iran has had “fundamental ambiguities & concerns” about which it has communicated to the IAEA.

He says Iran & the IAEA have been in talks about access to the sites but now an “unnecessary crisis” has been created, which he says is “unconstructive & political.”

Gharib Abadi says the resolution reflects “maximalist” aims & that Iran dismisses this.

He adds that Iran’s is voluntarily implementing the additional protocol, & that it’s not a legal commitment for it.

Based on Gharib Abadi’s response & what he says the Europeans told him, it does not seem like the IAEA BG will change the broader picture on Iran’s case at the IAEA.

But the Euros have a bargaining chip to use with Trump admin in talks at UNSC in the weeks & months ahead.
