but when you talk about social issues in dramas shouldnt there be likea conclusion or a message that its trying to convey like stereotypes are harmful etc for me some of these dramas just include "social" issues for the sake of being relevant but not really contributing a message
i dont watch dramas like these long enough to know how they tackled their themes but with what ive seen so far (and what people are saying) their "serious themes" are often too shallow to convey any real message, for example what abt homosexuality, patirotism, sexism, etc.
for me they just dont have substance sksks with shows like misaeng, live, gangnam beauty, the message is clear and is actually helpful in portraying how harmful their tackled "social issues" are (gender/age discrimination/inequality, unrealistic beauty standards) are harmful
if you just include a gay character in your drama what does that do really? ur trying to say youre representing the minority but what about it? did you include themes like homophobia is harming/abusing millions of lgbt community, bec of it they dont get jobs, they get killed etc
do the same gay characters you inserted in your plot a person with a personality, dreams, goals, and has made their voice against the discriminating world? if not whats the point of including one if its not helpful...
art doesnt just exist as is. shouldnt there be a message?
i got a little worked up but seriously with Shows that just include "social issues" but dont go deeper,, another example is extracurricular,, talks abt prostituion, how its ruining lives but people who choose to partake in it arent necessarily bad persons, ar times theyre coerced
extracurricular had a clear message,, and its telling us the leads arent the good guys, theyre assholes for profiting off these teenagers' bodies,, manipulating them into thinking theyre helping them earn money when theyre being plainly used to their advantage
this whole thread is the reason i had so much reservations with liking the filipino musical "ang huling el bimbo",, mentioned rape and class struggle resulting to criminalized jobs,, but didnt even used this theme to empower women who had experienced rape/sexual harassment,,
instead used her getting raped as a plot device for the lead men's character development 😱 and they even made them act like it was HER who ruined their lives when theyre the ones who fucked their friend over,, assholes
correction: i misspoke and said extracurricular was a "good example",, i meant that its a good example of what a drama who is trying to tackle social issues should be,, the message is so clear and sharp in it that it might as well cut you,, pls watch extracurricular yall!!! đŸ„°
