because korean names typically are 3 characters, but 2 and 4 character names also exist. I haven’t personally seen any 5 character names, but it may be possible with a foreigner name, eg Daniel Im would be 다니엘 임 which is 4 characters instead of Im Changkyun which is 3
This is just my opinion, but from how I see it, Soogeun only offered KH to use their foreign names in order to help Kihyun answer his question (he has only one more heart left!) he is trying to come up with ideas for him to make it work with the 5-character rule he set for him
And KH outsmarted this rule by using 셔누와 주헌 (Shownu and Jooheon) (note: “Shownu and Jooheon” is also NOT 5 letters, it’s 5 syllables, and they acknowledged his answer as being acceptable/correct)
his initial Q is “a member who seems like he has many secrets!” This gives context to “나갔다가 안 들어오고” (나갔다: lit.: to go out, to exit a place, in this context, leaving the dorm; 안 들어오고: lit.: not come in, not enter a place, in this context, to return to the dorm)
If anyone is curious about the suffix that is -다가, here is the reference. It’s not that relevant to the argument here but I didn’t want to leave it out in case there are ambiguities. 나갔다가: while (this member is) out and about
To suggest “leaving” in WH’s context would have used something like 떠나가다. As you can see from the dictionary suggestion, 나갔다 almost always means to go out, get out of a particular tangible location. There are other usages of this words that don’t apply here. You may think
OH! Here it says to “quit”, but if you look at the e.g, it uses “he gets out of/from the company” = he quit, with a dynamic translation approach, but even then, the word 나갔다 requires, as mentioned, a tangible location, which Soogeun does not use/cannot be inferred from context
I think it is easy to misconstrue this and there are complaints about this being “the official Seezn translation” but please keep in mind that translators don’t know the full history and background of everything they translate. This translator may not know of WH’s departure from
MX and it is not fair for us to assume that they should know so. Technically, there is little mistake to what they’ve translated given that they have taken a pretty dynamic/meaning-based translation approach, but it only strikes us as offensive bc of the knowledge WE have as fans
Are they wrong for using the word “leave”? Not really, it is correct in this sense, though one would not find good reason to mention “leaving a particular place” unless there’s a need to explain so. Are they wrong for using “5 letters”? Also not really,
because that’s how languages differ, and they want it to be comprehensible to an english-speaking audience that recognises letters instead of characters. E.g at this screenshot: is Argentina 5 words or 5 letters long? Most certainly not, but it /is/ 5 Korean characters long
And that’s where the differences lie. I don’t blame the translator for their choice of translation and I don’t blame imbbs for misunderstanding this from their translation choice, but if there has not been public outrage from anyone who understands korean +
There is a translator account you trust that you would like to enquire with, you should do so. I think imbbs’ feelings are valid, but I also think that when it comes to cross-cultural communication, it is important to get all your facts right first
because it will end up as an endless spread of misinformation that causes outrage for something that could have been resolved with some clarification. Hope this helps
