Twitter, help me out here.

<oversimplified summary of a contentious topic which clearly shows which side of the debate I am on and seeks validation for that view from a constituency I already know exists and identify with>

Genuine question: am I right?

*jazz hands*
<repetition of my pre-existing view expressed in slightly more absolute terms but posing as a response to a reply I received>

[quote tweet of a reply which took "Genuine question" at face value and tried to engage reasonably on the topic while disagreeing on the implied view]
<repetition of my existing view in strident terms pointing to someone who agrees as being representative of the majority of right-thinking people>

[quote tweet of a reply which picked up the implication in the original "question" and ran with it in harsh, blunt, offensive terms]
<outrage at the behaviour of those who disagree with my existing view, implying they are all abusive and cannot be reasoned with, much tutting and shaking of head>

[quote tweet of a reply which saw through the original dog whistle and disagreed in harsh, blunt, offensive terms]
So it looks like you can't even ask a civil question about <contentious subject> on here without <opponents> being abusive to you. No wonder <reiteration, finally in honest and blunt terms, of firmly held view>. It's clear that <opponents> are just not prepared to listen. Sad.
