for everyone who doesn’t really know what’s going on in the middle east, here’s a thread explaining what’s going on in a couple of countries. If I miss anything please add on to it <3
Yemen Crisis
so back in 2011 an uprising forced the current president to hand over his presidency to the deputy. he was supposed to bring the country into order but struggled to deal with various problems including militant attacks, corruption and food insecurity
the war itself started back in 2014 when the houthi shia muslim rebel movement took advantage of the current president’s weakness and seized control. war has been going on ever since and has sparked one of the largest humanitarian crises. along with this global pandemic yemen
Israeli-Palestinian conflict
the israeli-palestinian conflict is over who gets what land and how it’s controlled. in the late 19th century jews were trying to escape the anti semitism of europe and wanted to establish roots in what used to be a majority arab and muslim territory
the arabs resisted, seeing the land as rightfully theirs. an early united nations plan to give each group part of the land failed, and israel and the surrounding arab nations fought several wars over the territory.
today’s lines largely reflect the outcomes of two of these wars, one waged in 1948 and another in 1967. the war in 1967 is especially important as it left israel in control of the west bank and gaza strip which were home to large palestinian populations.
now the west bank is controlled by palestinians but jews are building large communities in the west bank in order to deny the palestinians of the rightful land. free palestine and give them their rightful land !!! https://www.change.org/p/beto-o-rourke-beto-support-peace-justice-in-palestine-israel
Syrian civil war
started in 2011 after two teens were arrested and tortured for painting revolutionary slogans on a school wall. after this pro democracy protests spread across the country and a demand for the current president to be overthrown. the government’s brutality did
+ not stop protesters and they continuously protested. violence escalated and the country slowly went into civil war. by august 2015 over 250,000 people were killed.
the civil war in syria has became more than just overthrowing president assad It has acquired sectarian overtones, pitching the country's Sunni majority against the president's Shia Alawite sect, and drawn in regional and world powers. The rise of the jihadist group ISIS
please add extra as this is all I currently know about. take action, just because no one is speaking about the middle east doesn’t mean it’s ok for you to be silent either :(
