I’m seeing cultural orgs trip over to highlight the few Black people they’ve worked with or awarded. This is dangerous ground as you’re bringing their race into their work & celebrating YOUR proximity to Blackness rather than them as individual, equal artists. Think about it.
It’s very much leading to a culture of they/I got this gig/opportunity because I am Black. This has happened before and lead led to further structural inequality and racism in the workplace. This is why in 80s/90s there were many more Black people in the arts but few now. Think.
REMEMBER YOUR ACTIONS OF TODAY HAVE LASTING EFFECTS ON OUR FUTURE. I don’t want Black people facing the same racism & mircoagressions of the 90s where it was assumed you got your role to fill as gap not bc of your talent. The workplace can be hostile environment for Black people.
The issues of mental health and long term illness are a direct effect of racism and as Black many of us will seen the anger and pain in our parents and grandparents generation. I recall the 80s & 90s with the arts filled with Black people and now...?!
I am asking people to be mindful of how their amplification leads to equality or does it lead to resentment? Can you tell? Have you asked enough and listened hard or are you quick to create the tweet that becomes virtue signalling and damaging?
