Rough and Rowdy Ways is a masterpiece. Full of riches and a total entity in itself. Brilliant.
I’ve been going to see Dylan every time he’s in London with my pops and godfather since I was a young teenager - I sure hope the Never Ending Tour is back on the road soon enough once this crisis is over. Love to see Dylan do some of these tracks live.
The album sounds more purposeful than Tempest and Together Through Life. One of the great things about the three before those records is that they had real purpose: Time out of Mind was dealing with his own mortality; Love and Theft was getting back to the blues, dipping into the
Mississippi; Modern Times was all about ‘digging up those long dead souls from their crumbling tombs’ and repackaging them for today. And now Rough and Ready has a real sense of purpose - it’s a return to his songwriting of old, full of playfulness, love and stark imagery.
Key West in particular is a work of genius. At 79 we had no right to expect anything. What a wonderful record this is.
