the history of juneteenth- just in case you don’t know
share this thread and educate yourself!!
juneteenth is one of the oldest nationally celebrated holidays in celebration of the abolishment of slavery in the u.s. back in 1865, major general gordon granger ended in galveston, tx with the news that the war was over and all the enslaved were now free. 1/?
the slaves had BEEN freed, the emancipation proclamation was signed in 1863, but there wasn’t enough union troops to enforce it, sl it had very little impact. but when general lee surrendered in 1865, and general granger was reassigned, there was enough force to influence it. 2/?
general granger had to read general order number 3 which stated: “the people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between 3/?
former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.” this news was if course shocking to the newly released. they didnt have anywhere to go but they felt that leaving was their first taste of freedom. 4/?
the south was still racist towards black people, but they decided to go their own ways. they went to states like lousiana, arkansas, and oklahoma. it was challenging for black people to settle anywhere because of all the racism, but they fit themselves in the narrative. 5/?
they would celebrate june 19th as the day they finally got their freedom with parties and festivities. juneteenth is WIDELY celebrated all around america, and will continue to be for generations on.
now, juneteenth is recognized as a national holiday! achievement!
