I'm so tired of the equation of 'trans representation' with 'narratives of hatred, abuse and death' in all mainstream(ish) fiction. https://twitter.com/JusticeKazzy_/status/1273680511559503873
In real life, we have a lot going on besides our being trans (even though there might be times in some of our lives when it's difficult for us to focus on other things). We have dreams, experiences, ideas, abilities, needs, quirks, passions, relationships, worries, and more.
And while being trans might affect everything else in our lives in one way or another, so does that other stuff - it all makes us who we are.
If you want to tell deep, dark and complex stories about trans people, you can do it without it being (exclusively) about transness.
If you want to tell deep, dark and complex stories about trans people, you can do it without it being (exclusively) about transness.
And if you absolutely have to tell stories about transness (can't imagine why but hey), make them stories of solidarity, freedom, power, and love (but not the romantic kind 'cause you'd probably mess that up somehow). 'Trans as tragedy' is lazy writing and harmful to us.
But tbh what you really should do is hire trans people to tell those stories. Not because no one else can tell good stories about transness (although that's also debatable), but because we a) need employment and b) deserve compensation if you use our narratives to make money.
I mean, this is nothing that hasn't been said a gazillion times, 0% my original thinking involved in this thread, but seems like it needs to be repeated more often and by more ppl.
