I moved to business at the Mercury News in 2011 - there were more than a dozen staff dedicated to tech coverage.

Today: Zero

Alden Global completely destroyed a storied home for tech journalism just as tech became the most dominant force in the market. https://twitter.com/daviddebolt/status/1273823456044318720
When I moved into The Argus newsroom in 2003, there were a dozen reporters dedicated to local, school and business beats in Fremont and surrounding cities.

Today, that is one reporter. Covering three-plus cities, including the fourth largest city in the Bay Area. Every beat.
When I moved to the Bay Area 20 years ago, there were 4 major papers: The San Jose Mercury News, The San Francisco Chronicle, Contra Costa Times and Oakland Tribune.

Alden Global mashed three together and robbed them of everything from buildings to people, mastheads to dignity.
There are others with plenty of blame on their ledgers. A lot of money has been made in Silicon Valley in the past two decades off the backs of civic institutions like Bay Area legacy journalism, with no remuneration.

When will that some of that money #SaveTheNews?
