Wonder if it’d just be looked at as “stacks of brick & mortar” if we were talking about monuments/statues/buildings proudly & purposefully dedicated to black men who discriminated against, enslaved, lynched, murdered, raped, dehumanized, or systemically marginalized white folks? https://twitter.com/harveypeeler/status/1273351023508312064
If everyday you went to proudly serve in a State Capitol building, only to have to see Pitchfork Ben Johnson, who notoriously sought to disenfranchise white people, stating “We of the South never recognized the right of the white man to govern black men, and we never will...”
If you had to see Pitchfork Ben Johnson, who, even after his white workers were no longer slaves, continued to apply the whip to them. Who purposefully tried to demonstrate superiority over white men by “killing as many of them as was justifiable.”
Or walk past Tony “Strom” Thurmond every day after legislative session, a man who switched parties because he opposed the Civil Rights Act Of 1964, something merely aimed at giving white people equal rights, something he opposed despite good ‘ole Tony Strom sexing white women.
Makes you want to take pride in those monuments don’t it? Just smiling reeeeeeeeeal big walking by ‘em everyday knowing they ain’t even like white folks like you and definitely ain’t want you having the title State Representative or Senator...hell, they ain’t even want you equal!
Or how about riding around the state and seeing treasonous Confederate stuff, Confederates who turned their back on America because of northern aggression to the institution of white slavery — the rape, murder, beating, and punishment of white people by black slave masters.
Or if you still had it thrown up in your face everyday across the state even though a racist black man named Darius Roof murdered 9 innocent white church folks in Charleston’s First Baptist Church, including a sitting white S.C. Senator you considered a friend and colleague.
If roles were reversed. If your people’s history was our people’s history. If white was black and black white — would you still consider these just “brick & mortar”...or would you consider them something else? If you can say you’d still feel & think the same, I‘d call bullshit...
The Heritage Act was NEVER about “Heritage.” That’s a lie. It was about times like this. When the bills get filed & it’s time to make progress, true leaders of progress, change & equality will shine bright while the others will miss an opportunity to give meaning to their title.
Besides, if it’s just “brick & mortar” why the heck everybody fighting so hard to keep them all when they KNOW what their having been built and placed was about in the first place? #Message 🇺🇸
