A thread on why we should all pay attention to the latest shocking news from Malta. Those who want to enshrine 'gender identity' in our laws often hold up the tiny nation as an exemplar. For 5 years it's topped the Rainbow Ratings for LGBT wokeyness.

2./ As the first country to score a perfect 100 for LGBT rights in 2018 the Economist cited its laws as THE international benchmarks for LGBT legislation not least on Self-ID for gender. 4./ Here's @ScottishTrans worshipping at the shrine of Holy Malta. "Why can't Scotland do the same" they ask plaintively. To which one answer may be that we have a civil society that asks serious questions and isn't as mired in cronyism as the political cess pit that's Malta?
5./ Malta's woke new laws were described as progressive and for both the SNP and the Tories under May trans rights and gender recognition reform seemed a perfect way to appear 'progressive' without annoying any powerful vested interests. But just how progressive WAS Malta really?
6./ When Joseph Muscat's Maltese Labour Party was elected in 2013 they were just another dull centrist party. Like Sturgeon and May they were about as radical on economics as Tony Blair. Trans rights though allowed them to dress themselves up and perform all progressively.
7./ But the Labour Party had a bête noire, a journalist called Daphne Caruana Galizia and she was having none of their woke BS. She stated the truth: males cannot become females and allowing Self-ID of gender was ridiculous. Here she is in full blown gender critical mode
8./ Yep, Daphne was tinged with TERFness. But it wasn't just the lies of 'gender identity' she loathed. Corruption was her bag. 9./ I was a Remainer myself but Dalli is a walking advert for Brexit. She's the EU's new Equality Commissioner despite the fact abortion is illegal in Malta and she did nothing about that. Here she is being 'grilled' by MEPs. Sheep could savage you worse.
10./ Dalli was the Minister who pushed through Malta's gender Self-ID but she's no angel. Here's one of Daphne' Galizia's blogs about Dalli's cronyism. 13./ A mutual friend of both @helenadalli and the brothel-visiting Minister then began to harass Galizia, and not just online. 14./ Galizia's claims against the folk who introduced "best practise" LGBT laws in Malta were relentless. 17./ The truth is Malta's Labour Party, the great progressive champion of 'best practise' gender identity law is a gangster operation. And deadly too. 18./ As street protests erupted Muscat pointed to his party's LGBT record as a fig leaf. Dalli defended him but while her judgement is suspect at least it's not as bad as her mate Deborah Schembri's. Here she is promoting Self-ID in the Council of Europe.
19./ The day after Galizia was murdered Schembri warned "freedom of expression should not be abused because some people may feel hurt.... 20./ When she was killed Galizia was on the way to her bank after Cardona's lawyers froze her assets as part of libel proceedings. Ever since 2017 he denied accusations of links to the killers. 21./ He's not the only close friend and colleague of Helena Dalli's to resign amid accusations of involvement in the murder. 24./ Is it an accident one of the most corrupt political parties in Europe pioneered Self-ID legislation? Daphne Galizia, before she was murdered, argued it wasn't. It was Malta's broken civil society that allowed these second-rate chancers to champion such nonsense.
25./ The Party of @helenadalli used seemingly progressive ideas to distract attention from its blatant corruption. She's still pushing those same ideas at the EU level. I wonder what it is she and other politicians who promote Self-ID are trying to distract us from this time?
