Matilda is the main autistic character and first off its really good to see an autistic women in media because usually we just get the stereotypical white autistic male ( sheldon, shaun, sam)

instead of matilda being treated as a burden like sam is treated in atypical, matildas symptoms are wholeheartedly accepted. when matilda stated she doesnt like hugs, her brother asked what they could do to get the same feeling as a hug without actually hugging

matilda replied with dancing and the family proceeded to dance and its just such a touching seen seeing everyone so happy and no one guilting matilda for not liking hugs

there is also a seen that suggests that matilda is hyperempathetic! this is super important because of the stereotype that all autistic people lack empathy, while many are actually hyperempathetic. this stereotype is leads to misdiagnosis and is generally very harmful.

matilda has a girlfriend who is also autistic!! they are so sweet and its nice to see an autistic person w another autistic person where they understand each other, rather than an autistic person with an allistic person who is frustrated w their symptoms ( think the good doctor)

Matilda is treated as a capable person by her brother (who again is her caretaker). At one point Matilda is accepted into the prestigious university Juliard, and when asked about "if she could really handle that" her brother was absolutely dumbfounded that they doubted her

oh also matilda is played by an autistic actor! Shes the only autistic character i can think of thats actually played by an autistic person
