This is my ode to emailIDs and clients. You guys remember how giggly we were when we first got our gmail Invites. I remember where I was, what I was doing and how it felt. I was at work, I was troubling my sister get me an invite because her guy worked at google. Took me a day.
The invite came, I wanted to pick just firstname@gmail. Obviously taken. there was a group around me touting a funny name, I was already cyclopse22 on hotmail... and sending that for applications seemed weird... finally went with full name and stuck with it.
day 2 was when I got 5 invites. It was social capital in my circles. I would send it to you if you were nice to me. I milked it for all I could.
google wave was as exciting. I didn& #39;t have to beg for invites anymore. Less social capital value, more awe of how new it was. Wave didn& #39;t need to fill the social hole. It was a brand new way of doing one old thing.
It& #39;s genius was reimagining email, its failure was to not include it. I think it stumbled so that basecamp and subsequently slack, notion could walk. Wave died a quick swift death.
Then came in sparrow. the glorious world of mail clients for those who wanted to check multiple IDs in single apps. Since smartphones were already a thing... an app was almost mandatory. Took mail apps and gmail apps to school.
@gmail killed sparrow and stripped it for parts to make @inboxbygmail. I was pissed. @dropbox launched mailbox. I was in love again. not just buttons on an app? WHAT! Swipe! damn! I had found email Heaven. I was still checking 3 IDs then. (personal, work1, @followblackswan)
I thought I would never have to look for another client again. I had found home. a year later, mailbox was retired. I lost it. Swore to never trust another non native client again. Gmail for android, apple mail for the Mac. never browser.
I did shop around @airmailer , inky, @Polymail. even @altomail for a bit. @CloudMagic was on my radar, but I couldn& #39;t afford it. I was still not sure I wanted to Pay that heavy a price for something that could be taken away.
A few years ago (5 I think) years ago I finally bit the bullet and got Newton. ( @cloudmagic). And that changed everything. 99$ a year was totally worth it. Totally. And boy it has been a rollercoaster ever since. Every few years, will-they-wont-they-shut-down.
Thankfully now, it seems they are here to stay. (knocks on wood until my knuckles hurt)
And now we have http://hey.com"> http://hey.com ( I just got in :) )

The point of this thread is... I have the same butterflies in my stomach I had when I first got the gmail invite. I hope this changes things for the better. You will know when I know.
End thread. (If you have read the whole thing... Wow. :) )
