OK here’s the deal. I went to FSU and really loved it. HOWEVER!! That did not and does not stop me from being critical of the university, it’s administration, and it’s students.
When I gave Campus tours, families always asked me what my least favorite part about FSU was. I said I wish we did not have a racist mascot (the Seminoles). Don’t even tell me there’s an agreement with the tribe because that’s a sham for show
The pro-israel sentiment among mainstream FSU is wild and largely unchecked. The SGA and AIPAC (NolePAC) partnership is strong and a little sickening.
Free speech on campus is a whole mess. White students free speech is protected and BIPOC students free speech is routinely struck down.
The “select student leaders” invited to the table are always the same select student leaders. They are an elitist tight group that hogs opportunities from students who could benefit more from those opportunities.
Don’t even get me started on leadership/ honor societies (Garnet and Gold Key, Burning Spear) that largely serve to bolster the egos of those a part of them.
FSU administration is largely reactive. I think a couple of the most pro-active groups on campus are the Center for Leadership and Social Change and Club Downunder
As someone who wants to go in to higher education and work in student affairs, I know a lot of change has to happen in universities and how they serve their students. I want to learn all I can and be a part of that change because I truly believe in the value of higher education.
