it’s the opportunity

REFLECTIONS:
There are a lot of people out there telling us we need to find our "passion",
our "why".

While this can be very important for business owners choosing a niche....

Here's, something I wish someone had told me earlier:

It's more important to...
2/10
... pick a general direction for your career, and build steady momentum in that direction for anywhere from 18 months to five years.

As long as it's still working for you, in the important ways mentioned in the above article, keep going in that direction.
3/10
If not, choose a different direction that seems very interesting to you, & meets "the criteria".

If you're an experienced professional and...
•you hate your job
•you've "outgrown" the role
•you've grown bored with your career path, & advancement is unappealing at best
4/10
Then this advice still applies.

If you're having trouble picking a new direction, use the following questions.

Either write out your answers, or find someone who can ask you the questions, and simply act as a sounding board, actively listening to your answers.
5/10
What are the projects you've done where...
•You enjoyed the work?
•Had fun?
•You were excited?
•Felt like you were making a significant impact or contribution?
•You did them, because you do then anyway. The outcome was less important to you than "doing the thing"?
6/10
Look for the answers that intersect with the most questions.

What was it about these examples that produced the most satisfying responses?

Was it the content & act of doing of the project itself?
The relationships?
The creative freedom you were given?
Something else?
7/10
Now, can you think of other things you've done in other areas of your life that have been similarly satisfying?
No limits here.
Reach as far back or outside your professional career as necessary.
Look for the patterns. What things do you really find gratifying about them?
8/10
By this point, your answers are hopefully beginning to paint a picture of the sorts of things you enjoy doing the most.

Now who pays people to do those kinds of things for work?

If you don't think anyone does... You're probably looking in the wrong places.

After doing this exercise, drop me any follow-up questions or responses in the comments.

I'd love to hear what's on your mind.
