While part of me feels optimistic that #BlackLivesMatter is gaining an increased amount of acceptance, another part of me worries that the movement will be co-opted and sanitized by the liberal establishment much in the way that feminism has been in the last decade.
Be critical of any organization or corporation that claims to support #BlackLivesMatter : How do these organizations treat their black workers? Do they have unions? Have they engaged in union-busting? Do they pay their black workers a #livingwage?
What actions are they taking to actively fight #SystemicRacism? What steps are they taking to ensure that their hiring practices are equitable and that black workers have an effective grievance process if they experience racist harassment/discrimination while working?
The fight for #BlackLiberation and #BlackEmpowerment is not an easy struggle. And while conversations about #WhitePrivilege and #WhiteSupremacy are an important part of fighting racism, they won't solve these problems without any meaningful, systemic change.
The struggle for #BlackLiberation and #BlackEmpowerment is a #ClassStruggle. We cannot expect supposedly "woke" members of the capitalist class to do anything to meaningfully resist #WhiteSupremacy because ultimately, white supremacy is ingrained in the capitalist system.
The capitalist class benefits from the status quo, and they will do anything to neutralize any meaningful resistance to the status quo even if it means appropriating the language of social justice.
Anyone can say #BlackLivesMatter . Any white person can admit they have #WhitePrivilege. But actually working to dismantle the systems that perpetuate #AntiBlackOppression requires action. It requires building working #ClassSolidarity (continued)
It requires building building #ClassSolidarity while acknowledging the unique struggles of individuals based on race, gender, sexual orientation, immigrant-status, etc.
Anyways, I don't know if I've actually said anything useful in this thread. I'm just fucking sick of cops murdering black people. I'm sick of people dying of #COVID19 (disproportionately black people, by the way, which relates to both #SystemicRacism and class).
Demand more from those in power than them simply endorsing #BlackLivesMatter . Demand they put their money where their mouth is, starting by ensuring that at bare minimum, they are treating their black workers fairly. Just saying "Black Lives Matter" isn't enough.
