Music Directors (and musicians in general) don't get nearly enough credit for what they do. https://twitter.com/lovemedleys/status/1273361650687639554
There's no Tony Award for Best Music Direction-the one creative who usually stays with the show through it's run. Most articles that Broadway sites release don't even mention the music supervisor let alone the music director.
Pit musicians who sub always have that first show where they have to play the book for the first time AT a performance. It’s expected that minimum errors are made.
I’ll never forget the shows that I’ve conducted for the first time with no “put-in” or rehearsal with the band beforehand. It was terrifying “trying it out” at a show where people paid money to see. The preparation we must do is massive.
What we do is crazy and not a lot of people know because for some reason, musicians have always been low on the totem pole regarding musical theatre, which is ironic since it’s called MUSICAL theatre.
Also stop talking over overtures and entr’actes. It’s disrespectful to not only your fellow audience members, but also the composer and the musicians playing it.
