Hey yall... they LEGALIZED RACISM IN CANADA, 06/17/20, AB MP Jason Kenney passed the Critical Infrastructure Defence Act. Theres been petitions to stop it from happening, but as of yesterday, those cries for help dont matter anymore. So heres what you need to know... [A thread]
Why did they do it? To build a fucking pipeline. Greed. & To exercise power over the indigenous community. Not only will it severely negatively impact the environment by deforestation, but through oil pollution. It's a racially fueled direct attack on those that are there.
Why do I say racially? Because this act wont be exercised in major cities like Calgary or Edmonton. It specifically will be designated to affect those who refuse to get off the land in the way of the pipeline.
How the act works: the government can deem places "essential infrastructure" thus allowing police and military to, now LEGALLY, remove any individual simply "occupying" said place. Even forcefully if they wanted to (not even need to, but even if they wanted to.)
What are some key places that can be classified as an "essential infrastructure"? As per section 1 of the act: 1.a.iii) a highway, transportation facility, transportation system, or rail transit system; 1.a.iv) a railway;  http://1.a.vi ) an agricultural operation ...
1.a.xiv) a radio apparatus; 1.a.xv) a dam; (and then to top it all off they had the audacity to include an "other" category) 1.a.xvi) a building, structure, device or other thing.
AND THE THEN THE LAND WHICH SAID ESSENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE IS LOCATED. As per the act, section 1.2. So even spaces like the parking lot in front of said location.
I highlighted these as KEY because these are the places where protests are being held. The government can simply claim said location of a protest as "essential infrastructure" then by law, you have to evict said space.
If you arrested on said land, the penalty as per the act section 3.1: a fine no less than $1000 up to $10,000 (up to $25,000 on repeat offense); or jail up to 6months; or both. And u already know how these costs and entering the prison system can affect individuals and families.
But i want to also add stress on Section 1 - 1.a.xvi) a building, structure... these can also be homes where people are sheltering away from the authorities. Where elders and babies.
Imagine authorities being able to legally force their way into these homes at 2am while people are asleep. Then now on top of being convicted, theyre left homeless.
Section 4 states "a peace officer may arrest, WITHOUT WARRANT" This needs no further explanation as to how fucked up that is.
I personally dont yet know what more to do than to email and make calls to your members of parliament, but all i can say in the mean time, if youre protesting in AB, please be careful. Now youre up to date. Do with this info what u will. I'll update you with more info as I go.
