i don’t like to involve myself in tweets like these since there are FAR more important things going on in the world but as a black woman attending a prestigious university i want to say a few things.
what ACA-5 would do is allow universities to take into account the race, sex, color, ethnicity,, etc. of applicants. some argue that doing so will reduce available spots for “qualified” students (specifically asians) that would be filled by “underqualified” non-asian students.
for someone to assume that the bill will have a direct negative impact on on asian students ONLY is beyond me. it is meant to resolve issues of racial/gender inequality made possible by admissions processes. those in support mean no harm, but rather recognize the problem.
for ty*e* s**h, who himself is a POC by definition (chile), to refer to ACA-5 as racist shows his elitist mentality. it is clear that he believes POC other than asians 😍, underqualified and that “throwing them into competitive schools”(S**h, 2020) will not “get them anywhere.”
ignorant mfs do not understand the struggle underprivileged students face when thinking about their futures. current admissions processes DO NOT show students’ capabilities. for ex, my ACT score of 30 is below average for my uni, which may suggest i cannot handle cornell’s rigor.
and YET, here i am having finished my first year with a 3.9 GPA. i can understand how it might be frustrating to be denied a spot at your “dream” school (which, most of the time, is so because of the reputation it holds), but try to see things from our point of view.
disadvantaged students are largely incapable of producing seemingly perfect applications. many of us are dedicated but simply do not have the resources, and would certainly excel when given the opportunity.
unlike the majority of black students in this country, i had the support of many teachers and mentors that helped me get to where i am today. i am also surrounded by friends that had a greater understanding of college admissions & helped me during that process.
i really am one of the lucky ones, & im excited to see california taking a step towards formulating more diverse student populations.
if you read this whole thread, thank you. after being admitted to cornell last year i definitely had some doubts about whether or not i had earned my place. i now realize that i most definitely did and hope that more underprivileged students know their worth! love u all <4
