A turning point for Hinata as a player was the ballboy arc. I tried to analyse how Furudate showed his evolution during this arc through his composition:
At the beginning of the camp, he immediately goes with the other players for the spiking drills. Now obviously it’s a mistake out of habit but it shows how he is focused on spiking the ball more than anything else.
The evolution in Hinata’s perception is made obvious through contrasts.
Furudate use a recurring element in this arc to show Hinata’s growth: his eyes. At first we see him watching closely the spikers and the ball, with the reflection of the ball and Goshiki appearing in his eyes.
But at some point Hinata realises that he has to change something, that he must make these 5 days count. And when he comes out of the storage room, we see his glaring eyes with the chapter’s title next to it: point of view.
And after that during the practice game, there is no ball anymore in Hinata’s eyes. As he says himself, he used to always follow the ball but not anymore. This is the first contrast that is used.
At the beginning we only had close angles showing the spiker and the setter, so basically where the ball is. But after Hinata’s change of perspective we get a growingly larger angle to finally get a view of the court, again making a clear cut.
Another difference is the way the ball is placed in panels. Before it was the central object in the panel, but then it’s not even fully represented in the panel and it’s just a detail in it.
Finally the constrast is telling here: previously we had the players presented and especially Kuroishi, but Hinata was focused on the ball, but afterwards when Kuroishi is playing Hinata is watching every little movement he makes, ignoring the ball
For Hinata, a point getter who only wanted to spike and developped only his scoring abilities before, this camp is a complete change as he can’t even stand on the court. He learns from it and grows into a more complete and intelligent player.
This is the mental contrast Furudate expressed brilliantly through the visual contrasts I mentionned. It’s yet again a masterful use of the visual narration to convey ideas by Furudate.
