I'm sick of this gaslighting by the BBC. Aren't there more important things going on? As a service user I've been shocked by the quackery from some of the 'clinicians' - many of those who've left woefully unqualified Jungian psychoanalysts without a medical degree between them. https://twitter.com/BBCNewsnight/status/1273702696076410882
They haven't mentioned the current wait is 27 months.
That puberty blockers have been used safely for trans youth since early 1980s.
Strange all the complaining clinicians had the same story? Almost like this was an organised campaign by a small group of out of depth Jungians
The fact they've mentioned a senior staff member by name, notably the only member of staff who is actively working on trans inclusive research programmes & with trans led organisations feels like an planned attack to undermine.
Not once in the piece was the impact of COVID mentioned. They did not state that Endocrinology services have effectively shut down with no new appointments, nor did they reference the @LGBTfdn report into the suffering caused by lack of access to healthcare.
They also failed to mention the recent UN report into Conversion Therapy which found that lack of access to healthcare for trans young people is harmful in and of itself.
They didn't mention the attempts by Liz Truss & current government to restrict healthcare for under 18s
It is almost laughable. The wait is 27 months long. There's then an assessment period of minimum 6 months & I know of many cases where this goes on for years. This is followed by (an unnecessary) requirement to be reversible hormone blockers for 12 months.
Not once did the piece reference the international standards for adolescent transgender healthcare. Namely the WPATH standard of Care and the Endocrinology guidelines. These are the two guiding standards which are referenced in the NHS service specification for trans adolescents
I've added the opening paragraphs below from the Endocrine society Clinical Practice Guidance position statement. It emphasises that being transgender is not a mental health condition. This has since been supported by the WHO who have similarly removed transgender as a "disorder"
So on one hand the Endocrine Society, which represents the global medical consensus on the clinical treatment of transgender adults and adolescents, is saying that being trans is not a mental health disorder & should not be treated as such & on the other is GIDS UK.
GIDS has operated as a monopoly since 1989, has its roots in the Anna Freud centre & the British Psychoanalysts Institute. I'll say again, these are not medical doctors but a hodgepodge of psychologists, social workers, family therapists & psychoanalysts.
Of course the psychoanalysts don't like medical interventions. They seek to deny treatment as long as they can. In the published words of GIDS head of Psychology: “Caution and uncertainty at times paralyse the clinician who endlessly defers the decision to medically treat”.
In conclusion this is a mendacious campaign launched by a small group of aggrieved former GIDS psychoanalysts & psychologists working with anti-trans lobbyists. All it took to get their propaganda repeated on prime BBC was a couple of well placed transphobes on the Newsnight team
