I was appalled and devastated when I came across some tweets a few days ago. I could never have imagined that such a putrid attitude could ever be prevalent among those who testify to our faith, and claim to be followers of RasulAllah ṣallā -llāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam
The point isn't necessarily the people, or the intention. It is the lack of etiquette with the anbiya, ʿalayhi ṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salām. Some of the tweets were Kufr. Some saw fit to bring astrology into the mix. Yet these tweets were racking up likes sometimes in the hundreds.
I am not going to enumerate all the tweets here about the "what is your favorite prophet?" fiasco and many others on twitter have already highlighted them and called this out.
But does this exist in a vacuum? Where does this stem from? Shaytan? Nafs? Ignorance of basic 'Aqidah? Memes, jokes and comments gone too far? Yes, perhaps.

But undermining the rank of Prophets has unfortunately been commonplace amongst certain pop-preachers of Islam too.
So when adab is flouted by even pop speakers, can one express shock when it is found lacking among the laymen as well?
For example, the popular preacher Nouman Ali Khan lectures on tafsir, yet fails to uphold proper respect for the anbiya ʿalayhi ṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salām

The below screenshotted quotes w/ timestamps are from a video with over 1.3million views

The video:
The meaning here is obvious. Nouman is saying RasulAllah ṣallā -llāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam became a muslim similar to one "converts, reverts, takes shahadah" & that "he had to come to belief"

This is explicitly saying he ṣallā -llāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam was not muslim before
This is a foolish attempt to "humanise" The Prophet ṣallā -llāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam. To try and make certain things "more relatable" to an audience, and all that was accomplished by this speech was denigration and kufr
Rasulallah ṣallā -llāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam was always upon tawhid and was always a believer in Allah. He was not ignorant of Allah or tawhid before the first revelation from Jibreel. There are abundant proofs of this. One proof is one of the opening ahadith in Sahih Al Bukhari:
There are of course other narrations to this effect. We are not going to enumerate all proofs on this matter here. It is also mentioned in books of aqidah, such as Al Fiqh Al Akbar attributed to Abu Hanifa, that Rasulallah ṣallā -llāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam never did shirk or kufr
"As for kufr, the ummah has ijma of their 'ismah from it — before nubuwwah and after it, there is no khilaf from anyone among them re/this — except azariqah from the khawarij who allowed sin, and all sin to them is kufr — so they entailed the permissibility of kufr" Sharh mawaqif
Nouman has used the ayah 42:52 as a basis for his position. Yet simply checking any of the tafsir literature shows the folly of Nouman's understanding. Some examples compiled by a brother (not even close to exhaustive) below:
Even "simple" tafsirs such as Al Jalalayn refute this understanding of the verse and explain "imaan" as it's ordinances and rituals (translation below):
Asrar Rashid has raised this issue re Nouman Ali Khan:
This is hardly Nouman's only instance of disparaging the anbiya ʿalayhi ṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salām

Nouman said: "Adam (as) and the devil do have some things in common. Hear me out before you start a campaign"

See the below screenshots of this Facebook post: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1187313594734714&id=185523868247030
The entire facebook post is presented for full context. The full post is an absolute travesty, not just the quote I mentioned, yet the hundreds of comments on it are mostly praise, except for a few who are rightfully shocked at this speech
But Nouman is not alone. Here is an example from a video with 1.8 million views from Omar Suleiman

"..how traumatized was the Prophet (sws) by the sight of jibreel? **He didn't even know who Allah was** or what Allah wanted from him..."

Timestamp 14:20
We have already highlighted why it is a problem to say "He didn't even know who Allah was" in the previous tweets.

Yet is this phenomenon exclusive to some celebrity preachers? Unfortunately it is even found among folk who seem to be more scholarly
Akram Nadwi when discussing the incident of the "golden calf", said Harun ʿalayhi s-salām accepted the people worshipping the calf for the sake of unity. That "jama'ah is more important". More then tawhid?

Timestamp is 7:24, transcript screenshotted:
The Quran mentions the reason Harun ʿalayhi s-salām did not stop them. It was that the mushrikeen were going to kill him.

Regardless of the overall message of the video, the points should absolutely not be made in this way
This is quite disappointing to someone (ie. myself) who took benefit from and has enjoyed some of Akram Nadwi's work:
"You are overreacting", "chill out".

Let us see what Qadi Iyad Al Maliki says in kitab ash shifa (Aisha Bewley translation is used). Below is what is mentioned regarding a statement far more innocuous then what Nouman Ali Khan said
Regarding a clear disparagement, what Qadi Iyad mentions is more severe

Note: While it is consensus that any Muslim who reviles a Prophet is an apostate, some scholars such as many hanafis DO accept the repentance of such a person as lifting the hadd punishment (unlike malikis)
"Ah but intention!"

Intention can be an excuse for statements of an ambiguous nature, but not for a clear-cut explicit statement, as mentioned by Qadi Iyad. Intention is not a card that excuses every utterance imaginable
There is more leeway for statements that are not so explicit, but as mentioned, even the more "innocuous" statements related by Qadi Iyad that were not kufr, still resulted in some disciplinary action towards the person. It's not a trivial issue to be dismissed as irrelevant
This poor adab towards anbiya is not limited to one particular group but I have seen it across groups

I am sure some will think I am doing this because of some personal issue or that I overreacting but I just want the proper respect for anbiya (as)
