an explanation of the facts and double standards around priyanka chopra (remade thread with more explanation, if you see someone misinformed on priyanka use this thread to spread awareness)
disclaimer: this will explain the actual facts based on research without personal opinions/agendas. i want to help educate in a world where we believe every opinion said on twitter as fact. i will give ample proof and receipts.
note: whether you read this thread an end up loving priyanka or not understand daily hate sent towards this women is unacceptable. their is a difference between constructive criticism and bullying. constantly using one person as a political/social scapegoat is wrong
- india+pakistan conflict/beautycon
in response to these attacks she tweeted “jai hind” which means long live india. it is the equivalent of saying god bless america and is said everyday in some schools in india. this is not a pro-war chant. she was congratulating the army for keeping innocent lives safe.
double standard: these are two big bollywood celebs they posted the same thing but received 0 scrutiny. (1) her tweet (2/3) other bollywood actors tweets from the same day
at beauty con she was called out by a pakastani american women who accused her of supporting nuclear war because of her tweet. here are the problems:
1.)as you can see from above this is a blatant lie. 2.) time and place: this was an open q and a of a beauty event and not the time nor the place to be addressing celebrities about politics and forcing false narratives.
3.) she tweeted this after. proof she wasn’t actually there to hold priyanka accountable, but to get attention and shed light on an issue. (2) a description of why she was wrong for calling priyanka out
people scrutinized her for her blind patriotism. patriotism is not a bad thing. just because you support your country doesn’t mean you support war or the leader. ex. you can be pro-america but anti-trump
as a UNICEF ambassador it is right to hold her accountable because she should not condone violence of any kind and that is the only point being rightfully questioned. but holding her accountable does not include endless bullying and trolling
UN did respond saying that UNICEF ambassadors are allowed to speak within their own personal capacity when not speaking on behalf of the UN. here is a video from the news that explains and debunks the whole situation:
if all that wasn’t enough...she said this during in an interview: *her working being the work with unicef helping children and women in refugee camps in displaced areas
skin lightening
over 10 years ago priyanka endorsed a skin lightening cream. she has since apologized and expressed deep remorse for ever aligning herself with these brands. of the bollywood celebs who endorsed these brands she is still the only one (bedsides sonam) to apologize. https://twitter.com/priyanka_loops/status/1272518339357741057
since the beginning of her career priyanka has spoken out about racism and colorism she faced both in the movie industry in india and when she was in the US for highschool
double standard: i’m not condoning the advertisement of skin lightening creams that perpetuate colorism from anyone especially people with big platforms, but i would like to point out that priyanka was not the only one. these are popular indian celebrities did too w/o apology
instead of using her as a scapegoat, here are two more effective ways to spend your time 1.) holding bollywood as a whole accountable for endorsing these products 2.) attacking the actual brands that make these products.
blm/performative activism
she posted for the black lives matter movement and got dragged because she didn’t post about every world problem to happen anywhere ever. she is not a politician and should be expected to speak out on everything that happens in the world
fake accent
background: priyanka grew up in the US for highschool, worked in the UK when she was miss world, and trained in an american accent for her TV show
people call her out for her “fake accent” they think she puts on in america. here are the problems:
1.) priyanka has never had a thick accent. here is a small part of her interview from 2012 before she moved to the US. (india’s most desirable
2.) making fun of her accent didn’t start when she moved the the US. kareena kapoor was on KWK and asking “where did priyanka get that accent” way before she moved to the US. this is not a new thing and has been happening since she lived in india
these next few i don’t consider controversies per say, but rather dumb things she gets trolled for that need clarification
covid clapping
yes, i understand the video of her clapping was funny/strange but for those that don’t actually know the meaning behind it, let me explain:
in india, the UK, and even later in NY government officials asked everyone to clap on their balconies to show appreciation for frontline workers.
double standard: mariah carey also posted a video of herself clapping but didn’t get any flack. let’s be honest: it’s not hate because of the action, but rather which person is doing it
since then she has done some amazing things for covid that didn’t get the recognition of her clapping: donating $500,000 (with jonas fam) to mayor find in LA, donation to 10 different organizations, donation of crocs and headphones to schools in need+
weekly live streams for a month that appreciated and told stories of from line workers, informative livestream on the misconceptions of covid, donating and speaking at iforindia
marriage
a lot of people troll her for her marriage to nick jonas. having problems with a women being older than a man and not having a problem when their is the same age gap but a man is older than the women is sexist. 4 highly praised couples who have the same or bigger age gaps:
if you think she is using him for money and fame please do one quick wikipedia search of who priyanka is. it also doesn’t matter who is more successful. just two adults who wanted to get married
as for the “100 weddings” i understand that is a joke, but i hope people know they were just celebrating both of their culture and traditions. if you think theirs was large please look at the ambani wedding. guest list included: hillary clinton and a performance from beyoncé
feminism
priyanka has always been an outspoken feminist. especially in a mostly male dominated industry for the first 15 years of her career. bollywood focuses on heroes over heroines, but she always pushed the envelope of what a women was “supposed” to do in the business
her feminism was questioned after beautycon. she did give a rude and snarky remark but as we previously discussed that women was yelling and spreading lies. the mic was taken away from her but not on priyankas orders it was security who realize what she saying was inappropriate
20 years of work for women and women’s rights should not be thrown away becuase of an interaction that never should’ve happened in the first place.
modi
she had never publicly supported modi or any of his policies. people assume she support him because of one picture they have together. here are other bollywood celebs that have pictures with him:
