I see a lot of confusion on here today. Usually, anything with the term “Letter” or “Opinion” in front of it is sent to a news organization for publication by the author. They usually call for action/stopping action on issues, and they do not reflect the views of the organization
Nor is it that organization’s duty to remove things or parse the argument of the author, as that would be antithetical to journalism ethics and free speech. Opinion pieces are not reported pieces.
Some larger papers can pick and choose what they publish or even commission opinion pieces (i.e. the NYT Cotton piece) but smaller organizations choose to publish everything that comes in.
So, if anyone has an opinion (about anything or a rebuttal to a recent opinion piece) I’d really encourage them to submit it to the organization of their choosing.
