A thread on the absurdity of police as public service (1/8)
About a month ago, I visited my parents in the sleepy Bay Area suburb where I grew up and went on a walk with my mom. Coming home, I spotted a young cat with a nasty neck infection.

Looking up resources on my phone, it turned out the only animal control available was the local police department. I thought this was strange but called the non emergency number anyway. The operator confirmed that animal control was not available and took my information.

After being told an officer would be dispatched, we waited. Of course the cat dashed away. Not having much to offer other than the info already given, we moved on. Leaving, I felt I did more harm than good by calling the police and not knowing who they would encounter.

It’s absurd how police have become catch-all’s for services that have no other resources (esp. mental health and homeless services). Calls for defunding are calls for funding more positive programs. Relying on police IS a vacuum of service, the anarchy is already here.

This morning, a mountain lion was caught roaming in downtown SF. Of course police were dispatched but it was animal control who captured the large cat for release.

It was reported that they trapped it in a large net because sedatives are potentially lethal to young lions. It is sickening that such considerations are taken for a MOUNTAIN LION ON THE STREETS while black lives are continuously taken for trivial or nonexistent matters.

Not far from my current home, Erik Salgado was killed, shot 40 times in his parked car by CHP. Brianna Colombo, in the passenger seat, was struck in the stomach killing their unborn child. In what world is this violence necessary? I can’t shake the horror of that.

We are not asking to remove order, we are demanding to be given order from this madness. #DefundPolice
