So my Poppy was a ship captain for Exxon and he has the best stories. I loved hearing them as a kid (still do). I thought a bunch of them were exaggerated. One of my favorites was how he plucked a convicted murderer out of the Hudson after he broke out of Rikers. Total tall tale.

And then today I found this in a box.

They became pen pals because Poppy felt bad for the guy (who I’m told murdered his wife).

He also rescued a downed pilot.

It ran in the family... my great-grandfather
