The procurement process started in 2013/14, and the aircraft was provided by Etihad Airways.

The first hurdle was that Italian law stops the use of any non-EU operators of state aircraft, so the aircraft had to be provided under a lease via the national airline Alitalia 2/?
Operated by 31 Stormo based at Rome-Ciampino, which operates all Italy’s VIP aircraft, another problem was that due to the size and technicalities of the machine itself, it had to be based separately at Rome-Fuimicino.

The second hand machine arrived in 2016 3/?
