Even at university this isnt always told. My first year history module on British economics from industrial revolution to Thatcher we spent 3 lectures on the industrial revolution. One 2 hour lecture on entrepreneurs - even some that pulled themselves up from humble beginnings 😉 https://twitter.com/jasonhickel/status/1272486694571442177
The lecturer, an expert in the field of British industrial revolution economics remember, spent ONE slide on slavery. Nothing on other aspects talked about in this thread. After showing the slide he stopped & asked if there was any questions or comments.
When I said that slavery must have been more important he said no, because after slavery Indians went to the Carribbean and worked for next to no money so there was always going to be that labour. The Carribbean was a very small part of Britain's economy.
This is the first time Ive ever heard of the Enclosure Movement. I have no conclusion here. Just saw this thread & reminded of that lecturer. He updated the reading that week with some historians that argue slave labour from the Americas was a v small aspect of the ind Revolution
