Yesterday, I sat in a panel and a Black relative referred to himself as a "settler of color." When it was my turn, I had to tell him he was not a settler. We need to stop telling Black folks they are settlers. I needed to share this bc its important.
I know that this is a deep conversation that I will be having with him personally but I had to tell him in public that he is not a settler, bc I will not allow white folks to use this to weaponize our Black relatives further. I told him, something along the lines...
that as an Indigenous womxn and non-Black POC, I had to mention this. I reminded him that we share a similar colonial history. Settlers to me are those who benefit from settler colonialism, which our Black relatives do not.
So I ask our Indigenous peoples from the Americas, to NOT refer to our Black relatives as "settlers of color." I think this term can def. apply to other "POC" who benefit in this society but our Black relatives were forced into this country (e.g. slavery, war, etc.).
Of course this in a depth conversation that cannot happen on twitter, but I believe that calling Black folks "settlers of color" roots from anti-Blackness and the denial of slavery. Now back to my dissertation, but cont. to do the anti-racism work.
I will share the panel once it's published online and I am done with this dissertation.
