Some thoughts on police:

America absolutely needs more spending on social programs!

But if you compare the US to Europe, it’s simply not the case that police spending is what’s stopping us — we need to tax the rich and spend more money.
There is a *lot* of evidence that police presence reduces crime, and simply pointing to low clearance rates doesn’t rebut this.
It is perverse to conclude that reform can’t or won’t work when the extremely mild reforms that have been adopted post-Ferguson have had benefits and when tons of very obvious reforms have not yet been done.
Last but by no means least, you should be wary of people who are this sloppy in handling causal inference.
