Tomorrow is Juneteenth, an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It represents freedom and liberation but is also a day to remember and honor those who suffered during American slavery. #JUNETEENTH2020
After the Confederate states surrendered in 1865, ending the Civil War, a Union general arrived in Texas on June 19th with an order stating that enslaved people were free under the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by President Abraham Lincoln more than two years prior.
This year, Juneteenth comes amid national #BlackLivesMatter protests over police brutality and demands for racial justice after the high-profile killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks and Ahmaud Arbery, among other Black people.
There are calls and petitions to make Juneteenth a national holiday. Currently, 47 states (including California) and the District of Columbia officially recognize the day. Some major corporations like Twitter, Nike and Target recently made it a company holiday.
