one day i will rly get into (fo4’s) interpretation of prewar america’s justice system (or lack thereof), tua’s relationship w it, and nick’s perception of it + his own moral compass
it should be clear by now that the way i write nick is vastly different but i do think theres more nuance to the the way the game approaches it than “prewar nick was a cop so synth nick is also a cop” and its worth elaborating on
the gist of it is, tho, that nick’s idea of his predecessor’s job is based more on prewar movies than actual memories, and regardless the point of synth nick is how much he is Not prewar nick and all that that implies
nick and tua’s biggest hurdle early on in their relationship was that nick put her on a pedestal defined by her association w the law. she was the true north on his moral compass. that lasted until the eddie winter debacle where they disagreed on how to handle it-
-and nick saw it as a betrayal bc hes just following the law, why wouldnt tua also follow the law? bc the alternative is that he is his own conscience. and given his identity issues, that’s inconceivable. they make up a few months later but it wakes nick up
the point of nick’s parroting of the prewar version is that he has no direct memories (more like impressions, or deja vu shit where its a memory to the left) is that its Pathetic. captial P Pathetic. i want to draw a parallel w modern interpretations of noir-
-and how silly it is. how the original house detectives were seen as dirty anti-heroes who were more aligned w the ppl they pursued than any semblance of justice. how women in the plots were always simplified to temptresses or angels
nick’s aware that the scene of prewar law is not great. its violent and bigoted. thjs should go without saying but he like. knows better. ive had ppl imply that nick would obviously be racist/transphobic toward tua and i hate that assumption lol
tua believes in the rule of law bc she believes in order... in prewar america this is an uphill battle that she has no misconceptions abt. by the time fo4 starts shes learning that things really are too fargone and shes got to look after herself. the irony is that-
-she was one step away from getting a private investigator license bc she still wanted to help ppl who werent going to be heard... its what she believes in, she has a very strong sense of justice
anyway this thread is draggin on but i wanted to touch on this. i dont dismiss the actual fallout lore but i do gloss over it at times bc if i interpret it literally then id be stuck writing torture/grief porn, seeing as my two leads r an agender black/mixtec paralegal and
a trans-coded robot man so like . im gonna be smart abt it but also i reserve the right to.. not get into all that immediately
