I created a a Twitter bot for class that every day tweets a thread about a random member of the US Congress' political donations and expenditures. Please consider following it - @donations_bot. THREAD/
Considering that in the 2018 election cycle, almost 90% of House seats were won by the candidate that raised the most money AND that less than 0.5% of Americans donated more than $200 to a political campaign, there can be no doubt that the system is rigged for the wealthy.
As it stands, not enough Americans can name their Congressperson, much less their biggest donors. Donations data is inaccessible and overwhelming - I hope this bot gives people an opportunity to take a small but significant dive into learning how much money there is in politics.
In addition to tweeting about members of Congress' campaign contributions, the bot will also be tweeting their DC offices' phone numbers and their Twitter handles. The responsibility to hold them accountable falls on us.
The data this bot tweets comes from @OpenSecretsDC APIs. The work the organization does to make this data accessible is crucial and underappreciated. I personally want to thank the employees who helped me with compiling an accurate list of every member of Congress.
Thank you for taking the time to read this thread.
