For the past week or so I’ve been heavily researching and trying to understand why the officers that killed Breonna Taylor haven’t been arrested or fired. So for anyone interested, I just wanted to share what I’ve been able to piece together:
It really sucks that the officers weren’t wearing body cams (which before this incident was not a requirement for the Louisville Police during the execution of a search warrant) because this grants the officers Qualified Immunity.
With out any video proof, the officers have gone on record saying they knocked several times (so lol why need a no knock warrant?), announced themselves and only opened fire once shot at. Kenneth Walker, Breonna’s boyfriend, says they broke into the house unannounced.
So now it’s the word of 3 cops against the word of Mr. Walker and because he fired at them (with a gun he was licensed to carry) these cops can hide behind qualified immunity by saying “we felt threatened because we were shot at”. This also keeps them from being fired.
But right now no one is even looking into this portion of the incident. Currently, the FBI is required to start the investigation of this case by looking into why exactly the ‘no-knock’ search warrant was even applied for or granted.
There was proof that this search warrant was completely unnescesary for Breonna Taylor’s apartment, yet Det. Joshua Jaynes went ahead and requested one anyways. He is currently on “administrative reassignment”.
Once the FBI has finished gathering their evidence, they then have to present it to the Department of Justice. This will be only the 2nd investigation that the DOJ has launched into any police departments since Trump has been in office from what I understand.
So then the case will be in the hands of the DOJ which is currently headed by the imbecile Atorney General Bill Barr who is a Trump minion meaning he will by no means be making this case a priority due to the Trump administrations belief that police reform is preposterous.
Soooo long story honestly as short as I could possibly make it, that is why it is taking so long to get these officers arrested/fired. And all of this is on top of the blatant racism at hand here.
BUT I didn’t make this thread for y’all to lose hope. I believe the basis of change is educating ourselves on what needs to be changed. Here are things we can still do to possibly help:
1. Please keep calling, emailing, harassing the Governor, the mayor, and the Kentucky AG Daniel Cameron. Keep Breonna Taylor’s name trending on social media. The state at first denied a private investigation of the matter but were forced to after the sheer amount of public outcry
2. Call, email, harass your states congressmen about repealing Qualified Immunity. The Supreme Court is no longer going to be the deciding factor on this and its now up to Congress.
3. While we’re at it, call, email, harass the Louisville Police Department to fire Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison and Myles Cosgrove for negligence. I mean, I’ve only been studying this stuff for a month now, but am I to believe that proper police training involves (1/3)
responding to one gun shot with emptying your clip blindly into the darkness towards where you heard the shot from? The officers shots not only ended up killing Breonna Taylor but went through the walls into other apartments and almost hit a pregnant woman! AND (2/3)
if that’s not enough, we should at least be able to argue for the firing of Brett Hankison on the multiple sexual assault charges against him alone! (3/3)
Well, for anyone that actually took the time to read this I hope it was informative. I know this is just one of an upsettingly long list that’s only getting longer, but I’m hoping getting to the bottom of one might help lead to something bigger. Idk.
