1/4 The Dark Side of Kpop narrative is popular in western media b/c anyone can write about it w/ no knowledge about music, much less Korea. In order to write about Korean music, they have to get past the language barrier & put in effort, which many just are not willing to do. + https://twitter.com/hyunsuinseoul/status/1273655839253921792
2/4 At this point, music critics cannot ignore music coming out of Korea, because like it or not, it's here to stay. And international music fans are listening to it & demanding coverage. This could be a great opportunity for Korean American & other minority writers, right? +
3/4 But some SK labels (NOT all) are guilty of wanting "American" names for prominent coverage. There's an antiquated mindset that a piece written by a white writer holds more value. My father was in Korean ent. & had told me about this decades ago. Sad that it's still true. +
4/4 I hope that in the next few years, all these amazingly talented POC and, specifically, WOC journalists will get the opportunities that should be going to them now. It's this younger generation that'll make the difference & I'm here for it. I can't wait to read all their work!
