Black students at the UC have been demanding the abolition of UCPD, an end to exploitative one-semester adjunct hiring, and cost of living adjustments up to 100% for months. after COVID hit, we knew that we could not trust our white peers to hold the picket line. we were correct. https://twitter.com/public_archive/status/1273674404501680129
this take frustratingly buys into the idea that we're all apathetic integrationists. sure, universities are flushed with respectable negroes. they are also flushed with black youth demanding some semblance of care in the eyes of the institution. wonder where we learned that from
campuses are rich with black students who openly denounce and refuse our induction into the overseer class. but you wouldn't know it, or know them, by dismissing black 20somethings who were raised to 'escape' the deprivations of the world we were born into as credential-hungry.
i'm not defending the ego escapades of college-educated negroes /and/ i /am/ weary of older black men critiquing mostly young black women's appropriation of resources to cultivate something like care when many of y'all only come out your office for CNN interviews & book keynotes.
that thread upsets me not bc he's wrong- he's correct re: unis do deal with blackness by absorbing energy & placating with performance- but bc it reeks of a deep distrust of young ppl to not repeat your mistakes. as if all of us want to teach classes of yt ppl for a living?
the points about black faculty are pretty right on tho lmao. we had faculty signing solidarity statements and still headsapsinnin when it came time for them to do their own grades bc of a labor strike. like... oh y'all were PLAYING playing? got it
