Not my friends and I..we had the university shook. After our protest we had 2 open forums, we met with the president and shared our recommendations of change with professors we considered to be our allies. They even created a “President’s student/alum council for cultural climate” https://twitter.com/sund3rr/status/1272993836772589568
Don’t get me wrong there was a tonnnnn of performative support. The staff came up with a “complicit no more” gesture in response to our “Silence No More” movement. They hung “Complicit no more” boards around the school for people to sign
But there were numerous professors that were blatantly racist or bigots that voiced microaggressions in and out of the classroom..signing the posters. They posters were also vandalized with phrases like “cops lives matter”, “this is racist itself”...
But conversations on the importance of representation at Universities for Black students, retentions rate, cultural competency tenure tracked mandatory education and the relationship between on campus security and the local police with the Black student population were discussed
I want to say that our conversations led to great changes within the university but they kept asking US how to tackle these issues. As students we couldn’t focus on our school work AND school reforms, policies and practices. And it wasn’t our job.
From what I know..the Presidents council of cultural climate and inclusivity is still a thing..but considering that our recommendations of change were very similar to the demands of a Black student led protest in the 1970s...the surface level fake work is being done and that’s it
