I wanted to make a point about UK Publishing. While everyone is talking about 'how' to hire more Black and Brown members of staff, it would be great if they could look at how they treat their CURRENT Black and Brown staff. Who gets promoted. Who gets payrises. Who feels valued.
I know WAY TOO MANY people who have left the industry because the experience has been so completely deflating. I know WAY TOO MANY people who have set up their own publishing businesses *outside* the mainstream because of how they've been treated.
Something to bear in mind when thinking about 'how to hire more Black and Brown people'. There's no point hiring them if there's no way for them to progress their careers like their White colleagues can.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
